This outstanding place was officially opened by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 6 December 1993 and it has attracted so many people to support its cause. Its corporate sponsor in HSBC set up the Sungei Buloh Education Fund in support of its nature outreach programmes in 1997. Woodlands Secondary School became the first school to adopt the park in 1999, followed by Commonwealth Secondary School in 2001 and Hillgrove Secondary School in 2002. 130-ha of Sungei Buloh was then officially gazetted as a nature reserve on 1 January 2002 and renamed as Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.
